The Foundation
The Uihlein Foundation lands support unique and diverse activities — by the Uihlein Foundation and its nonprofit partners — that enhance the quality of life in the Adirondacks.
The Uihlein Foundation (HUF), established in 1979 by Henry and Mildred Uihlein, is a 501(c)3 private foundation. In 2000, after the deaths of Mildred and Henry, the Uihlein Foundation began annual grantmaking and land conservation following Henry’s guidelines, as expressed in words:
“It is my intent and I therefore request that the Trustees find a use for the properties I call Heaven Hill Farm which will be of benefit to the public and in consonance with the charitable purposes of the Foundation, while at the same time preserving the pastoral beauty and rural flavor of the land.”
— Henry Uihlein II
Mission
To support community and charitable causes related to agriculture, arts and culture, community, education, environment, and winter sports.
Vision
The Uihlein Foundation (HUF) is a private foundation that honors the intentions of Henry and Mildred Uihlein and manages its assets for charitable and public purposes.
Foundation lands include Heaven Hill Farm, Uihlein Farm, Tablelands Farm, Henry’s Woods and Heaven Hill Trails.
Heaven Hill Farm
Heaven Hill Farm is home to HUF’s administrative offices and offers space and services for charitable organizations to host events, meetings, and nonprofit offices. It supports agriculture and grassland bird studies and management.
Uihlein Farm
Uihlein Farm is the foundation’s nonprofit campus that makes available office, research, event, and agricultural space for charitable organizations that align with HUF principles.
Henry’s Woods and Heaven Hill Trails
Henry’s Woods and Heaven Hill Trails are community preserves that provide more than ten miles of trails for outdoor experience and recreation for residents and visitors.
Tablelands Farm
Tablelands Farm is historical farmland. The foundation is currently evaluating the restoration of the farm for community benefit.
Cultural Resources
In 2023 the Uihlein Foundation contracted with Hartgen Archeological Associates Inc. to do an archeological and historical investigation of the Uihlein lands. The report contains a great deal of interesting information about the history and people who have lived here dating back to the 19th century.
In 2025 the Foundation once again contracted with Hartgen Archeological Associates Inc. to do an archeological investigation of the Epps family historic site. The purpose of this report was to help the foundation identify the boundaries of the archeological site of the Epps family homestead, constructed by Henry and Ruth Thompson in 1859 and purchased by the Epps in 1863. The report contains fascinating history and images of artifacts found at the site, giving us a glimpse of what life was like then.
Grants
The Henry II and Mildred A. Uihlein Foundation was established in 1979, but it was not until the year 2000, after the passing of both Henry and Mildred, that the foundation began its support of regional nonprofit organizations. The Uihleins strongly believed in supporting their community and cared deeply for many different charitable causes related to agriculture, arts and culture, community, education, environment, and winter sports.
At this time the foundation is not accepting open grant proposals.
